Working Tax Credit – The Childcare Element
You may be able to get extra help with the cost of ‘registered’ or ‘approved’ childcare i.e. Kiddi Caru Day Nurseries. We call this the childcare element within Working Tax Credit.
You can only receive the childcare element if you are working at least 16 hours a week. If you are part of a couple, both you and your partner must each work at least 16 hours, unless one of you is unable to work because of incapacity.
The childcare element can help with up to 80% of your childcare costs up to a maximum cost of £175 a week for one child and £300 a week for two or more children. This means that the childcare element is worth up to an extra
- £140 a week (£175 x 80%) for one child, or
- £240 a week (£300 x 80%) for two or more children.
The amount you receive will depend on your income and will be paid directly to the main carer.
The childcare element is added to the amount of Working Tax Credit you can get. The final amount will depend on your income (or joint income, if you are part of a couple).
Go online at www.inlandrevenue.gov.uk/taxcredits to check if you are eligible. If you are due tax credits, you will be able to make your claim online immediately.
